Your GIS tool belt.
Mapbelt brings small GIS jobs into one browser toolkit. The tools need no account, and your files are never uploaded.
Choose a tool
| Tool | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Service inspector | Read WMS, WMTS and XYZ services, inspect layers, request URLs and metadata, or view the service on a map. Loading an image is a separate action. |
| GeoTIFF viewer | Look at a GeoTIFF on a map: choose its bands, stretch and opacity, and read its basic facts. A reduced copy is drawn on your device. |
| GeoTIFF diagnoser | Read local TIFF/BigTIFF metadata and common georeferencing and layout findings. It does not decode pixels or certify COG conformance. |
| Batch raster audit | Inspect up to 100 files in turn, review failures, search reports and collect footprints. Cancelled runs keep the files already done. |
| Footprint exporter | Outline a raster as GeoJSON or KML: the plain bounding box, or a convex hull around the pixels that hold data. EPSG:4326 and 3857 rasters. |
| Bounding box toolkit | Draw or type geographic bounds and get WKT and GeoJSON straight away. West greater than east crosses the antimeridian. |
| XYZ tile calculator | Convert longitude/latitude and zoom into XYZ/TMS indices and a tile polygon. |
| Easy Crop | Draw a crop box on a GeoTIFF and export the clip with its georeferencing, with Deflate or LZW compression if you want it. |
| Reproject | Move a GeoTIFF, GeoJSON or CSV into another coordinate system, with nearest, bilinear, cubic or Lanczos resampling for rasters. |
| Raster Compressor | Rewrite a GeoTIFF as a smaller tiled GeoTIFF, Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF, JPEG, WebP or PNG, with an estimated size before you start. |
| Raster export adviser | Generate reviewed GDAL settings and quoted commands for lossless exports or explicitly lossy visual JPEG. Conversion runs in your own GDAL, not in Mapbelt. |
| Coverage planner | Estimate box area and overlap, and count XYZ tiles across zoom levels. It counts a mathematical grid; it does not probe a tile provider. |
| Satellite Band Motion GIF | Animate the bands of one Sentinel-2 image to reveal planes, ships and vehicles that moved between band captures. |
| Umbra SICD | Open an Umbra SICD radar file: its footprint, scene and collection details, a quick-look, amplitude and colour images, and motion frames from splitting the radar aperture. Only the parts of the file it needs are read, on your device. |
Repeat a job
Saved sessions stores selected calculator and export settings in this browser only when you click Save. Portable JSON works across browsers. Service URLs, file paths, pixels and raster reports are excluded. Restoring settings hides old calculated outputs and does not rerun requests.
Use Import saved audit JSON to review an earlier report. Imported results keep an imported-report label and are not verified against source files. The import accepts Mapbelt batch, individual file and raster-diagnoser reports, with bounded structural validation.
Privacy and network use
- Your files stay on your device. GeoTIFFs, GeoJSON and CSV files are read in your browser and any result is written locally. Nothing you open is uploaded.
- Maps. The interactive map loads OpenStreetMap street tiles from tile.openstreetmap.org, or Esri World Imagery satellite tiles from server.arcgisonline.com when you choose Satellite, for the area you are viewing. Untick Online basemap, or choose Offline diagram, to make no tile requests. Place search sends the place name you type to OpenStreetMap Nominatim.
- Analytics. Mapbelt first asks you to accept or decline Google Analytics and loads nothing from Google until you accept. If you accept, it counts visits and which tools are used (the tool's name only, never your files, coordinates or anything you type). You can change your mind from the Analytics link in the sidebar.
- Satellite Band Motion GIF is the one tool that talks to a data provider. It searches Microsoft's public Planetary Computer catalogue and reads image tiles from its storage; the area and dates you enter are sent to Microsoft, and no account or credentials are involved.
- Sign-in is optional and only offered when the site has it switched on. It is provided by Clerk. Nothing is loaded from Clerk until you press Sign in, and your files and results are never sent to it.
- Umbra SICD reads your file in slices on your device and never uploads it. Like the other maps, it loads basemap tiles unless you turn them off.
- Service inspector contacts the endpoint you enter. Image preview contacts the service's advertised image or tile URL when you choose Load image. Browser credentials are omitted; URL parameters remain part of those requests.
- Browser storage holds explicitly saved settings only. Clearing it may remove access to those settings; keep JSON copies when needed.
- Reports can contain filenames, geographic extents and service metadata. Common secret query parameters are redacted in service snapshots, but arbitrary secrets in other text or path segments may remain. Review reports before sharing.
When something fails
- Service access: browsers may block CORS, TLS, mixed-content or network requests. A browser error does not prove the service is down. Open the request directly or save and import its XML.
- No preview: metadata can be readable even when the advertised CRS, dimensions, format or tile matrix is unsupported. WMS previews support advertised CRS:84/EPSG:4326. WMTS supports specified geographic and Web Mercator matrices and valid limits.
- Unsupported raster: footprint export accepts identified EPSG:4326 and 3857 with supported transforms. Other CRSs, contradictory units and raster geometry that crosses the antimeridian need desktop GIS work.
- Storage denied: use session JSON instead. Mapbelt does not depend on storage for its calculations.
- Unexpected error: reload before continuing. Your saved browser settings remain; nothing was uploaded.
Accuracy and limits
The raster tools (GeoTIFF viewer, Footprint exporter, Easy Crop, Reproject, Raster Compressor and the diagnosers) read both classic TIFF and BigTIFF, in either byte order, stripped or tiled, with Deflate or LZW and predictors. Files they write are classic TIFF unless they would pass 4 GiB, when they are written as BigTIFF automatically. Remote Sentinel-2 data in the Satellite Band Motion GIF tool is read as classic cloud-optimized TIFF only. Coverage areas use a sphere and rectangle edges along meridians and parallels. They are not ellipsoidal survey measurements. Tile counts include positive-area intersections, clip polar latitude and deduplicate seam columns. Display grids are not basemaps. Raster corners are transformed without edge densification.
